TV Show Spotlight: Shadowhunters

Name: Shadowhunters

Seasons: 1

What It’s About: A young Shadowhunter named Clary learns to cope with a whole new world that was kept hidden from her her entire life. Shadowhunters are half angel, half humans who protect the world from demons. In this world there are all sorts of paranormal creatures, including vampires, werewolves, and zombies. There are your typical evil villains and all the great twists you can think of.

My Thoughts: Although I have not read the Mortal Instruments series, nor do I plan to, I found this world to be completely captivating. I loved the characters and their interactions. There were strong female friendships from the start without any boring rivalries. Most of the main cast is POC, which just warms the cockles of my heart. I loved that there are so many mythical creatures without creating complete chaos. I must admit the special effects can be cheesy, along with some of the romantic storylines *cough, cough, Clary and Jace* but there was still so much to love. I think my love for the show is rooted in the wonderful existence of Magnus, but it evolved into more when I fell for Izzy and Alec and Simon. I think people should see this show as an entirely separate entity from the books. I think this is such a great show, and I cannot wait for the next season.

Name: Bates Motel

Seasons: 3 (4th season starts 3/07/16)

What It’s About: This show is essentially the prequel to the novel and film Psycho. It’s the story of Norma Bates, a loving, overprotective mother, and her son, Norman, who is one psychotic individual. There’s a lot of crime  going on in the small town of White Pine Bay, most of which is repeatedly swept under a rug. Norman falls right in the middle of everything.

My Thoughts: I’ve read the book, and I’ve seen the film. Needless to say, I am quite obsessed with this story and its characters. The show adds so much depth to both Norma and Norman, and it’s so hard not to love their twisted minds. Another factor I love about this adaptation is the addition of Dylan, Norman’s brother. I completely adore him, and I think he brings some sanity into the family. I devoured season 3 in a few days, especially because each season is only 10 episodes long. This show is packed with action, murder, intrigue, and wonderful characters that keep you guessing. It is purely addictive.

Name: Dexter

Seasons: 8

What it’s About: Dexter is a psychopath serial killer who works as a blood splatter analyst for Miami Metro Homicide. Throughout the seasons, he struggles with work, family, his love life along with his urges to kill, and his efforts to keep that a secret from everyone. He is a different kind of serial killer one that only kills other murderers.

My Thoughts: The basis for the show is very interesting, and they had a lot to work with. The writers were good at keeping me on the edge of my seat, and making me want to keep watching until late into the night. The first seasons were definitely better than the later seasons. The finale was particularly awful. However, I still think the early seasons were good enough to make the effort to watch regardless. I heard they might make a reboot which I am a little iffy about, but I would still check it out anyway.
