T.V. Show Spotlight: 3%

Name: 3%

Seasons: 1

What It’s About: It’s a dystopian thriller, and Netflix’s first original Brazilian production. It’s set in a future  where people generally live in bad conditions. However, there’s a paradise called the Offshore, but in order to be able to get there they have to pass a series of tests. You can only have one chance at it in your life, and only 3% pass it. It follows multiple people over the eight episode season.

My Thoughts: I had no idea what to expect from this, but I loved it so much more than I thought I would. With every episode there was a twist I wasn’t expecting. I grew fond of all the characters, and enjoyed watching their journey. There was one episode I didn’t like as much, it was bit slower though it was important overall, but I liked all the others. Though the audio took a bit to get used to. Since it’s from Brazil, the original is in Portuguese, so when I switched it to English studio it’s slightly off. But it isn’t a big deal. Also, trigger warning for suicide and some torture in the later episodes. It just got renewed, so I can’t wait for the second season.

TV Show Spotlight: Preacher

Name: Preacher

Seasons: 1

What It’s About: AMC’s Preacher is the adaptation of the 1995 comics by Garth Ennis. It’s an action packed show starring a morally-questionable preacher by the name of Jesse Custer, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip O’Hare, and their amazing vampire buddy Cassidy. These three make one of the best odd teams, and their dynamic is great. The gist of it is that this freaky, divine–invisible–creature named Genesis entered Jesse’s body, giving him the power of obedience by command. Jesse can say the word and people have to do as he says. There are angels after this creature, and other enemies that they have to face.

My Thoughts: I can’t remember the last time I saw such a fascinating show. I love supernatural shows, especially those involving angels, but this one just put a twist on everything. I love every single character and their complicated relationships. I love that there’s so much heart in the middle of the nonsensical madness going on in the small Texas town. This show is unpredictable. It doesn’t shy away from themes that are usually glossed over. They really dig deep into Christianity in refreshing ways. It’s also gory as hell, but it makes it all the more shocking. Since I’ve been waiting eagerly for season 2 to air, I recently picked up the first volume of the comics, and it was amazing. Not the same story, really, but the essence is there. Personally, I prefer the TV show, but I’m also going to give the rest of the volumes a shot. This story is incredible in either version.

TV Show Spotlight

Name: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Seasons: 1

What It’s About: The title is pretty self-explanatory. This fantastic show centers around Rebecca, a successful, intelligent lawyer, who one day stumbles with her ex-boyfriend from her teen years, and moves across the country to be closer to him. It is just as ridiculous as it sounds, and equally hilarious. Rebecca meets a cast of fabulous characters to make her epic stunts even more entertaining. Oh, and everyone breaks into song every so often.

My Thoughts: I had never been interested in watching this show. The title turned me off from it. I’d heard some good things about it, but I’ve never been into musicals, so that also didn’t help. However, I had run out of shows to watch, and since Netflix currently has the entire first season, I had no reason to put it off any longer. And let me tell you, it was brilliant! There is so much to love about this show, starting with Rebecca, who is endearing and insane but so easy to empathize with. I just adored her. And every other character is so wonderful and charming. The cast is so diverse, and it deals with topics of sexuality and feminism. The songs are witty, hilarious, and so much fun. I can’t think of a single thing that I dislike about this show. It is just that good. And I want more!

TV Show Spotlight: Shadowhunters

Name: Shadowhunters

Seasons: 1

What It’s About: A young Shadowhunter named Clary learns to cope with a whole new world that was kept hidden from her her entire life. Shadowhunters are half angel, half humans who protect the world from demons. In this world there are all sorts of paranormal creatures, including vampires, werewolves, and zombies. There are your typical evil villains and all the great twists you can think of.

My Thoughts: Although I have not read the Mortal Instruments series, nor do I plan to, I found this world to be completely captivating. I loved the characters and their interactions. There were strong female friendships from the start without any boring rivalries. Most of the main cast is POC, which just warms the cockles of my heart. I loved that there are so many mythical creatures without creating complete chaos. I must admit the special effects can be cheesy, along with some of the romantic storylines *cough, cough, Clary and Jace* but there was still so much to love. I think my love for the show is rooted in the wonderful existence of Magnus, but it evolved into more when I fell for Izzy and Alec and Simon. I think people should see this show as an entirely separate entity from the books. I think this is such a great show, and I cannot wait for the next season.

T.V. Show Spotlight-12 Monkeys

Name: 12 Monkeys

Seasons: 1 (Second season starts 4/18/16)

What It’s About: Based off of the 1995 movie, in post-apocalyptic future time travel is thought to be the only way to save everyone from the plague that wipes out seven million people. They send back James Cole to stop the virus before it can spread. He meets Dr. Cassandra Railly, a virologist, and convinces her to help him. But not everyone wants to stop the plague.

My Thoughts: I really like how they did the time travel in this show. They don’t have a lot of complicated explanations, and it is easy to follow along. That isn’t why I like the show though. Its strong point is the characters. They all get developed nicely. Their motivations and actions are all understandable and clear and well thought out. And I like them all. This show surprised me. In good ways.
