When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon – Book Review

“This is our life. We get to decide the rules.”

When Dimple Met Rishi was my most anticipated release of the year. From the cover, to the title, to the adorable synopsis, everything about it screamed to me. As soon as I got the book, I read it. The first few days of reading it, I loved it so much. I was fully immersed and sort of obsessed with the world and the characters. But then my reading slump got to me, big time, and I put it down for two weeks. Fortunately, I picked it up again and finished this beautiful book.

This book follows Dimple, an eighteen year-old girl freshly graduated from high school. She got accepted to Stanford to pursue her love for web development, but first she’s going to a summer camp where she will have to develop an app. I adored Dimple from the start. She’s witty, headstrong, brave, and all-around amazing. I really loved her passion for her field, and how sure she was of her future career.

Rishi, on the other hand, was very traditional and goal-oriented. He knew what he wanted, or what he should want, and he went for it. I found him incredibly endearing. He was kindhearted and blunt, but very confident in himself. I loved the way he spoke. He was so charming.

That being said, I loved the sweet moments between Dimple and Rishi. Their relationship was complex because they were first brought together for the sole reason of an arranged marriage, which Dimple completely opposed — and she was not afraid to let him know. But as time went by, of course, they grew to know each other and got closer. I admired the way they communicated all the time, trying to see each other’s perspectives. I liked that we got to see what both of them were thinking.

The overall plot of the book was also intriguing. I got to learn more about Dimple’s passion, as well as Rishi’s. I was rooting for both of them, individually and then together. I wanted nothing but the best for them. My few issues were that, at times, the story felt a little predictable, and maybe too easy. But at the end of the day, I wanted a feel-good read, and that’s exactly what I got.

And of course, I must mention that Sandhya Menon has become one of my new favorite authors. I love her writing style. It’s perfectly original without being strange. She has such a great way of capturing every scene and every character in the best way. I look forward to reading everything else she writes!

  1. Beautifully written review! I’m so glad you enjoyed the book! Aside from all the clichés which I found to be rather irritating at times, I thought the book was a fun, lighthearted read that required little analytical effort. It was just fun and charming. Probably not something I would every want to reread but it’s definitely a perfect beachside summer read.
Anyway, I look forward to reading more from you in the future… Happy Reading! 🙂
