What It’s About: AMC’s Preacher is the adaptation of the 1995 comics by Garth Ennis. It’s an action packed show starring a morally-questionable preacher by the name of Jesse Custer, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip O’Hare, and their amazing vampire buddy Cassidy. These three make one of the best odd teams, and their dynamic is great. The gist of it is that this freaky, divine–invisible–creature named Genesis entered Jesse’s body, giving him the power of obedience by command. Jesse can say the word and people have to do as he says. There are angels after this creature, and other enemies that they have to face.
My Thoughts: I can’t remember the last time I saw such a fascinating show. I love supernatural shows, especially those involving angels, but this one just put a twist on everything. I love every single character and their complicated relationships. I love that there’s so much heart in the middle of the nonsensical madness going on in the small Texas town. This show is unpredictable. It doesn’t shy away from themes that are usually glossed over. They really dig deep into Christianity in refreshing ways. It’s also gory as hell, but it makes it all the more shocking. Since I’ve been waiting eagerly for season 2 to air, I recently picked up the first volume of the comics, and it was amazing. Not the same story, really, but the essence is there. Personally, I prefer the TV show, but I’m also going to give the rest of the volumes a shot. This story is incredible in either version.
